Driving Instructor Courses
You can find training courses to become a driving instructor all over the UK. No matter where you live you’ll be able to find a training school in your local area. Becoming a fully qualified driving instructor could take as little as 12 weeks so you can have your own business up and running in next to no time.
If you need to fit your driving instruction training around your current employment, then you will find part-time courses which will allow you to train whilst maintaining your current position. Alternatively if you are keen to get the ball rolling, there are intensive residential courses available in the UK for driving instruction which offer aspiring driving instructors a fast track to qualifying.
When researching different driving instructor training options make sure that your chosen course is accredited with the Drivers Standards Agency (DSA), this way you’ll receive a recognised qualification at the end. Courses which are approved as part of the Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT) are also important to look out for.
In order to be eligible to apply to become a driving instructor you must have held a full UK/EU drivers licence for a minimum of 3.5 years, and if you have more than 6 points on your license then this could jeopardise your chance of getting accepted on to a driving instruction course. In order to become a fully qualified driving instructor you must also pass a criminal record check.
You will need to pass a three part examination before you can practice as an ADI approved driving instructor. The first section is a multi-choice 100 question theory test, the second part is an-hour long driving exam, and thirdly you’ll need to complete a role-play based exam which will test your ability as an instructor. To maintain your ADI approved status you will need to re-validate your approval every 4 years.
