Choosin a driving instructor

For a person to teach you to learn to drive for rroney or rroney's vtorth, they must be an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

To become an ADI an individual hasto passthree exams to be fully qualified. Once they pass they have to be registered vvith The Driving Standards Agency(DSA) and be periodically checked (checktest) to ensure they maintain an acceptable standard of tuition. A fully qualified instructor has to display a green octagon identification certificate on the windscreen. A trainee driving instructor, vvho is teaching to gain experience before taking the final teaching exam, hasto display a pinktriangle identification certificate on the windscreen. If neither of tiiese are displayed, the individual is teaching illegally. It is unlikely that anyone otherthan an ADI vtould have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. When an instructor takes the final instructional abilities examthey receive a grade vvhich denotes hovv well they did.

The grades can be comparable to exam results at school or university. Grade Comparable to Analysis of performance

Grade 1 F Very poor
Grade 2 E Poor
Grade 3 D Inadequate
Grade 4 C Adequate
Grade 5 B Good
Grade 6 A Very good indeed

In fact only 7% of the approximately 36,000 instructors registered with the Driving Standards Agency achieve the top grade 6 standard of excperience. I am a grade 6 instructor. However it doesn't end there. To keep our standards up we are periodically checked by a supervising examiner to ensure that we are teaching to a high standard, this is called a check test. During a lesson a supervising examiner will sit in the back of the car and assess an instructor on a number of different categories and at the end grade him/her on their teaching ability. On my last check test I achieved grade 6 in every category, 100%. If an instructor achieves Iower than a grade 4 (grade 3,2 or 1 ) he/she fails. They are then re-checked soon after to see if they have improved their standard and if not can be removed from the register in due course and have their instructor's licence revoked. So, as you can see we are not left to bumble along and do our own thing. We have to keep our standards high vvhich affords you, the customer, a certain level of quality.

If you have any doubt regarding the grade you have been quoted, you can ask to see the last check test resultsform(AD| 25 CT (A) ) which is completed by the supervising examiner at the end of the check test. This provides an analysis of the instructor's teaching ability and the grade they were issued as a result.
The quality of tuition and ultimately the expertise you will posses as a driver will be reflected by the instructor’s grade. The higher the grade the more skilled and thorough the instructor is likely to be with fault assessment and instructional techniques. Ignoring this may seriously damage your pocket.
